UK E-Cigarette Use Hits Record High

Recently, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) released the results of its latest survey on adult e-cigarette use in the UK. The survey found that e-cigarette use in the UK is now at an all-time high of 9.1 per cent.

Around 4.7 million adults in the UK use e-cigarettes, of which around 2.7 million have switched from using cigarettes to e-cigarettes, around 1.7 million use e-cigarettes alongside cigarettes, and around 320,000 are e-cigarette users who have never used cigarettes.

Regarding the reasons for e-cigarette use, 31% of the respondents said it was to change the habit of using cigarettes, 14% said they liked using e-cigarettes, and 12% said it was to save money. Respondents who still smoked indicated that the main reason for using e-cigarettes was to reduce the amount of cigarettes they smoked. Of respondents who had not used cigarettes, 39 per cent said the reason for using e-cigarettes was to enjoy the experience.

The most common type of e-cigarette in the UK is the refillable e-cigarette, with 50 per cent of e-cigarette users indicating that they primarily use this product. Disposable e-cigarettes are becoming more popular in 2023 compared to 2021 and 2022.The use of disposable e-cigarettes in the UK was 2.3 per cent in 2021 and 15 per cent in 2022, compared to an estimated 31 per cent in 2023. Use of disposable e-cigarettes is increasing rapidly among 18- to 24-year-olds, with 57 per cent of e-cigarette users in this age group primarily using disposable e-cigarettes.
